The Importance Of Managing Your Expectations

It's time to trade your expectations for appreciation. It's true, we are all built in a unique way. From our genetics, psychology and physiology every single one of us is built differently.

Why did I start with this statement? This is one of the first steps with managing expectations is being aware of your unique make-up.

We may all have different rates of weight loss

We may all have different health conditions or status

We may all have different genetics

Ultimately, we may all respond differently to a given stimulus.

Trade your expectations for appreciation

Mindset is a term that gets thrown around a lot, and it is my belief that those that manage expectations have nailed an important step in developing a consistent result bearing mindset.

Lets take a dive into some important aspects of expectation setting we may use at our personal training facility:

For example, some expectations we set up in our programs for fat loss and body composition include markers of:

Weekly Body Fat Loss Average: 0.5-1% of current body fat loss per week

Weekly Weight Loss: 0.5-1% of current weight loss per week

Body Tape Measurements (Waist): 0.5cm loss per week

Now, as personal trainers we need markers to work with so we can plan and make a plan. Though, do understand we do not live in a perfect linear world. It's very important to understand this as:

  • Body weight will fluctuate
  • Markers may plateau (For example with the menstrual cycle for ladies) 
  • Health conditions and/or inflammation may slow the rate of fat loss
  • Your individual genetics may influence the speed of progress

I also recommend to not compare yourself to others. You are unique. You are build unique. Maximise what you have. From experience, those that compare themselves to others may have their expectations let down due to something that isn't realistically obtainable for them.

As personal trainers we need to have the hard and honest conversation of what is realistic and what isn't. Though, it is my belief at the end of the day the goal should be to better YOURSELF and maximise once again what you have.

Trade your expectations for appreciation. Appreciate the effort you put in towards your self betterment.
