The Alarming Obesity Epidemic in Australia

As Australians, we are facing a growing health crisis that demands our immediate attention - the obesity epidemic. The statistics are staggering. According to the Obesity Evidence Hub, in 2025 a shocking 70% of Australian adults are currently living with obesity or being overweight. In some regions, the rate is even higher, reaching over 70% in outer regional and remote areas. What's more, severe obesity (BMI of 40 or more) has more than doubled from 2.2% to 4.6% in recent years.

The problem extends beyond just adults, with one in four Australian children now classified as overweight or obese. This is a truly alarming trend that threatens the future health and wellbeing of our nation.

Obesity is not just a cosmetic issue - it is a serious health concern. It is now the highest leading risk factor for ill health and death, trailing only behind tobacco use. Obesity is linked to over 30 diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. The consequences are severe, and the time for action is now.

Shifting the Mindset: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs

As personal trainer and health coach In the last 2 years alone I have completed over 700 clients consultations, the key to winning the war against obesity often starts with the stories we tell ourselves. Many people struggle with limiting beliefs that hold them back from achieving their health and fitness goals.

Some common limiting beliefs include:

  • "I am a foodie, so I struggle with consistency."
  • "I am all or nothing, which leads to yo-yo dieting."
  • "I am just big-boned or too old to lose weight."
  • "I am not disciplined enough to get in shape."

These self-limiting narratives can be powerful obstacles, but they can also be changed. At MPH we encourage clients to reframe their mindset, shifting from "I am" statements to "I am a healthy person who eats for performance" or "I am an athlete who eats to fuel my goals."

Developing the right character traits is also crucial. Traits like grit, delayed gratification, and an awareness of the costs of ignorance can make all the difference in achieving long-term success.  "If you change your story, you'll potentially change your life."

Leading by Example: Empowering Your Kids to Embrace Healthy Habits

One of the most powerful ways to combat the obesity epidemic is to start with our children. As parents, we have a profound influence on the health and fitness habits of our kids. If you are reading this, you are your children's first fitness coach, whether we like it or not.

The key is to lead by example. When children see their parents making healthy choices, exercising regularly, and prioritizing their well-being, they are much more likely to adopt those same behaviors. A great example would be our client Jason. A busy father, business owner and client of MPH. Jason's son Alex discovered that by simply observing his father's healthy lifestyle and joining in on his gym sessions had a significant impact on his own fitness journey.

However, be aware of pushing too hard or being overly strict. Instead, he recommends creating a supportive and nurturing environment where healthy habits become the norm. By changing the family's environment and culture, you can profoundly influence your children's behaviors and set them up for a lifetime of health and wellness.

Mastering Nutrition: The Key to Combating Obesity

When it comes to winning the war against obesity, nutrition is the foundation. The world is drowning in information but starving for wisdom when it comes to health and fitness advice. With so many diets and trends, it can be overwhelming to know what approach will work best.

Our simple, yet effective, nutrition philosophy focuses on four main food groups: fish, hunted, plucked, and gathered. This framework emphasizes whole, nutrient-dense foods that are high in fiber, support hormone health, and help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Some key principles of the MPH nutrition philosophy include:

  • Prioritize Protein and Healthy Fats: These macronutrients are essential for building muscle, supporting satiety, and maintaining overall health.
  • Consume Plenty of Vegetables: Vegetables are packed with fiber, vitamins, and minerals that support optimal body function.
  • Manage Healthy Carbohydrates: Carefully selecting and portioning carbohydrate sources can help stabilize blood sugar and prevent energy crashes.
  • Avoid Excessive Processed and Sugary Foods: These foods can disrupt blood sugar regulation and contribute to weight gain and other health issues.

By following this simple, whole-food-based approach, we have helped countless clients, from busy professionals to elite athletes, achieve remarkable body transformations and improve their overall health and well-being.

Supplementing for Success: Targeted Nutrition Support

While a whole-food-based diet is the foundation, We also recognizes the value of targeted supplementation to support clients' health and fitness goals. Here are three key supplements that we often recommend:

  • Magnesium: Many Australians are deficient in this essential mineral, which plays a crucial role in energy production, muscle function, and sleep quality. I suggests a nighttime magnesium supplement to help with recovery and relaxation.
  • Fish Oil: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fish oil has been shown to support joint health, brain function, and even aid in fat loss when taken alongside exercise.
  • Multivitamin: A high-quality multivitamin can help fill any nutritional gaps and ensure your body is getting the essential vitamins and minerals it needs to thrive.

In addition to these foundational supplements, I have also developed our own line of performance-enhancing products through our supplement company, MPH Nutrition. Our first offering is a coffee-based supplement that combines electrolytes, protein, and African mango powder to support energy, muscle recovery, and weight management.

By incorporating targeted supplementation alongside a nutrient-dense diet and regular exercise, Our clients have been able to achieve remarkable transformations and improve their overall health and well-being.
