If you value keeping your mental health as positive and as healthy as can be, you need to respect the big 3 - Exercise, Nutrition & Sleep
It comes to no surprise that focusing on the big 3 has been shown in research and in the field to drastically improve mental health and wellness.
Yet, these three areas are usually the most neglected. Often substituted for a quick fix, medication or supplement. Which don't get me wrong, at times is very much needed.
But once again we may find ourselves in a situation where we are treating symptoms while not managing the cause of the issues.
Exercise is a great form of activity to improve your mental wellbeing. Yes, as a bi-product of doing exercise you have the opportunity to change how you physically look - which can help your mental health as such by increasing your confidence... But also from a physiological aspect the endorphin high, hormone benefits, and sense of achievement are all great takeaways towards increasing the positive impact of your mental health.
Very simply have a form of exercise you enjoy and can be consistent with. That may include some aerobic work, HIIT and strength sessions. Depending on your goals, time constraints and other obligations: Workout between 2-5 days in the week and get a daily walk in the sun. Your mental health will thank you.
Very simply put: Move Better. Feel Better.
Sleep is one of the areas we focus on improving with our personal training service. It is absolutely vital towards achieving results that include body transformations and holistic health transformations. From growth hormone spike, detoxification, cell regeneration, brain health and tissue repair - these are just some benefits of what sleep can help with.
In todays society, there are many different stressors from work, society induced expectations and stress that can lead to poor sleep. All of which may impact your mental health in a negative way.
Both quality and quantity matters when it comes to measuring the success of your sleep routine. Aim for 7-9 hours, try and finishing eating 2 hours pre bed, limit artificial light exposure and have a wind down routine.
If you want to set yourself up for a great day, it starts with yesterdays sleep routine.
If you have metabolic dysfunctions like poor blood sugar stability or high blood pressure - these health concerns will impact your mental health in a negative way. Even just carrying around too much adipose body fat tissue will make you feel more sluggish, stiff and low in energy. All of which will pay a toll on your mental health.
Your daily nutrition intake can influence many, many things. This includes your gut health, hormone health, energy levels, inflammation status, brain health and strength. Eating foods that cause digestive issues will impact your mental health negatively. Inflammation will put you into a sympathetic fight or flight response, which in excess wears down your mental well being.
Eating foods that sit well digestively, limiting over consumption and later day timing of caffeine containing liquids/supplements/foods, eating foods that stabilise blood sugar, not force feeding and limiting processed "junk" will have positive improvements towards your mental health.
Mental health really does start with an assessment of your holistic overall health and wellbeing.
Nail these big 3. Your mental health deserves it.
