Have you ever heard of metabolic flexibility? Well if you haven't and wish for faster results this blog may be your ticket to speed things up!

So what is metabolic flexibility? In a nut shell and not to over complicate things, metabolic flexibility refers to how well your body can switch from burning fats (fatty acids) to carbs (glucose) for fuel and vice versa. Basically, it is a measure of how well the body can switch its fuel sources to convert into energy.

On paper, someone who is has a fantastic metabolic flexibility will have:

- Increased performance

- Better fat loss capabilities

- Better insulin sensitivity

- Better carbohydrate threshold - meaning they can eat more carbs and there will be less spill over into fat storage

- More energy

- Increased capabilities to build more lean mass and muscle tissue

- A better overall vital metabolic health

Someone who has a poor metabolic flexibility can be in reference to someone who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as an example. Where the bodies processes that help use glucose/carbs for fuel are not efficient. This can make you feel sluggish, have excess body fat storage, have a range of metabolic issues ie. cholesterol, blood sugar, inflammation etc...

Ok, so now you get the point that metabolic flexibility may be something you need to respect. But how can you actually achieve this?

Our personal training service whether its face to face at our studio or online personal training focuses on helping clients achieve metabolic flexibility, which speeds up fat loss and body composition results by following some key principles:

  • You need to review your current lifestyle, nutrition, stressors and training structure. This will help make decisions that will be favourable for the above
  • Adding specific strength training to your workout routine will help insulin sensitivity and help prevent insulin resistance. Aiding the body in the way it uses carbohydrates for fuel.
  • Finding your carbohydrate threshold. Knowing the point where anything beyond that threshold will spill over into body fat storage
  • Adding some form of cardio whether it is HIIT or LISS - aiding in fat oxidisation and how well you burn fats for fuel.
  • Abiding by the rules of staying in a deficit of calories. Once again aiding fat burning and insulin sensitivity.
  • Timing your carbohydrates around your workout.
  • Improving your lifestyle - such as sleeping 7-9 hours for a good night quality.

These are some ways to turn your body into more of a fat burning machine. Using both forms of energy for fuel in the best way possible. There are also so more tactics you can use like fasting, intermittent fasting and carbohydrate cycling to further push your metabolic flexibility. Though as a basic run down, keeping it simple is always best.

Metabolic flexibility. Respect it.
